God Bless the Stand-Up Comedian
On September 27, 2018, I turned the chapter on my 16-year marketing career in the pursuit of uncovering the stories the world is missing. I didn't choose the name Audacity simply because of the great alphabet positioning. It's a warning, similar to Dave Chappelle's stand-up special, "Sticks & Stones".
I love comedy for the same reason I love marketing. Those who are the most successful have the creative energy and boldness to make life simple.
Comedy is a humbling craft and necessary to our ecosystem. I'm the wife of a professional stand-up comedian, so I speak from experience. They have the ability to put everything and everyone on an equal playing field, which is why I'm probably taking the pseudo-backlash from this cancel-culture a little more personal than I should. My husband told me to “calm down” because Dave Chappelle is not losing any sleep over this! Well, I have.
Since the rise of social media, emerging artists are worn by the chase of the covenant blue check mark and online followers. So, yes! It was empowering and liberating to watch Dave Chappelle do what Dave Chappelle does. An artist’s responsibility is to explore, dissect and re-imagine the world. Dave Chappelle reminded us as James Baldwin reminded a young Nikki Giovanni, “Most people rarely challenge the assumptions they are given”...but they should.
God bless the stand-up comedian.
